LIGHTWAVE 3D ANIMATION SOFTWARE

VDB volumes are better in the other software because.ġ. It´s like 11 points in this list, probably more but those are the direct reflections right now, the only positive note on the VDB´s compared to the other software, would be that it in fact is openVDB, so you can use the imports with gas solver for instance, but that is unfortunately good enough as all the other aspects in the other software outweights the use of VDB´s in Lightwave unfortunately. which makes all this smoother, I am all for some serious VDB enhancement in any eventual lightwave upcoming release of course, wishing, but don´t excpect it to arrive. The description is from another software(name censored for sensitive children at minds). (Octane is not a matter of any investment any more for me, so we exlude it here). Here´s the issues I have with VDB that kind of makes it intolerable for me to work with most VDB volumes in lightwave Screw the old thinking of we don´t talk to our customer about development. With the pandemic, hybrid distance work, I would think it now would be the time to change how you hire for development, screw be there at location each day, or move from other countries, hire the gifted third party devs there is left, the final reserv soldiers, invest in tools to make it easier to work from distance, develop an internal workflow model for that, though I am sure it has been implemented to some degree already for many third party devs.but perhaps not fully recognized.ĭpont, sensei.and many others, we´ve just lost worley, deepRising and other major devs dropping their support. Screw.the old thinking of hiring devlopers. Vimeo has become just annoying, you can´t watch many vids if they aren´t rated, and have to log in.blah. The OD toolset by Oliver Hotz was a toolset with handy tools, that at the time I found it sort of not properly marketet and explained, or it could have been my mistake just not checking the right sources, then when I started to find it interesting, Oliver Left working on those tools, and I lost interest in them.Ī few of them are free, like OD copy and paste, works for blender and Houdini as well, some things don´t survive, like maps and some edge types, but if you just want a quick mesh in to houdini, you can assign to shortcut or middle menu the od copy, and in houdini od paste from external as it is called when pasted in to the software you currently are in, you need to keep in mind to save it in the main software of interest though.

Lightwave has some extra options to export mdd, animated meshes, deformed meshes as well as exporting out particles that are scanned.Ĭheck Denis site for additional nodes that can be handy. Scenefiles to houdini is something I haven´t messed with, mostly just modeled meshes then using houdinis cloudFX tools on lightwave models, then save out the Houdini made cloud to VDB and back to lightwave for rendering for instance, though you may nowadays ask yourself why render those in Lightwave. Layout, find the best file format for export, wether it is fbx, dae, abc for alembic.you would want as much retained as possible, abc should if set right give you a pixel perfect match with blender cam for instance, but that´s another story. of course it can, just model, save best obj format, open in Houdini. I am also involved teaching CGI since 2010 part time, and I did it with Lightwave3D for many years.now I'm just teaching Houdini as schools and universities had dropped Lightwave3D from its tools.Ĭlick to expand.I can answer the first question, not the last.

Lighwtave3D still can deliver but it is not really helpful when you trying to work for a big company. I have used Lightwave professionally since 2005 and still used it for some specific jobs I do on my own for different small clients, with the help of Houdini if needed.īut already, for many years, I'm working as Houdini freelance artist for different companies.

If you planing to work on your own, or even settings your own studio, Lighwtave3D is definitely a really nice tool to take into account, and probably learn. I would encourage you to learn Houdini as it is such an amazing tool to work with, where every bit makes sense, really organized, and also with lots of job opportunities along many different fields. If you want to start learning CGI and have chances to get a job in a company, don't learn Lightwave3D, as there aren't many companies using it any longer, if any :/ sadly.
